...and where did October go?!

And just like that, in the blink of an eye, October is over and we're gearing up for a crazy month of November.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as we get closer to the holiday season:
Friday, November 11: Veteran's Day (No School)
November 14 - 18: Conference Week (12:00 dismissal)
November 23 - 25: Thanksgiving Recess (No School)
It is going to be a cray month, but we will definitely make the most of it! Looking forward to catching up with everyone during the conference week!
Halloween Fun!
We ended October with a bang this week! On Monday we started our week off with an awesome Halloween celebration. Thank you to all of the parents who came out to our Reed School Halloween parade and our Room 4 Halloween party. The kids (and teachers!) had a blast parading around in their costumes, making Halloween crafts, and playing Halloween games. We owe a big thank you to our Room 4 party coordinators - Nooshin (Ava's mom) and Liz (Layne's mom) for organizing a fabulous room 4 Halloween extravaganza, and to all of the parents who donated snacks, pumpkins, and crafts for the kids. It was so great to see so many parents and siblings in our classroom! In case you couldn't make it, here is a peek at our fun-filled day... :)
50 Days Smarter!
Halloween just happened to coincide with our 50th day of school celebration on Monday! It is difficult to believe that we have already spent 50 days together as a room 4 family. Although there are times when I am amazed and in awe of how well the students have learned our school day routine, there are also moments when I feel like the school year just started. I cherish each day with this fabulous group and I absolutely love teaching and learning with these 22 faces every day. To celebrate the 50th day of school, we made a special 50th day snack using 5 different ingredients. We counted out ten pieces of each treat and then worked on counting by tens to count to 50. These mathematicians continue to impress me each day!
Pumpkin Science & Spider Facts!
This week we also learned about pumpkins and spiders! The students LOVE learning facts and reading non-fiction books. This week we talked about the differences between non-fiction and fiction. When you are reading books with your child at home, make predictions about whether the book is fiction or non-fiction and the reasons why!
After watching a great video by Scholastic, we had our very own pumpkin exploration with the help of Jen Riley (Summer's mom), Laura Smith (Carter's mom), and Cindy Sittmann (Miles' mom). The students measured, weighed, touched, smelled, and tested whether the pumpkins would sink or float. It was such a fun afternoon and I loved watching the kiddos "dig in" and touch the pumpkin guts! (Some room 4 friends were more excited about it than others.) ;)

We also learned cool facts about spiders - did you know there are over 30,000 types of spiders?? We learned about jumping spiders, fishing spiders, netcasting spiders, and trapdoor spiders. Check your child's Friday folder for a fun flip book with tons of cool spider facts!
Pumpkin Towers!
In the STEAM lab this week, we learned about coding by using a new app called Kodable! We also worked in teams to try to build the tallest tower we could using candy pumpkins and toothpicks!
That's a wrap for our Halloween and pumpkin-fun filled week! Check back next week to read about our Veteran's Day celebrations and the start to our Thanksgiving fun! I'll be hoping on a plane back to SFO tomorrow, but I did get to spend a (very quick) wonderful weekend with friends and family celebrating Baby Girl Bowe. My sisters and high school bestie hosted a fabulous shower at my mom and dad's house in southern California. This baby girl is so lucky to (already) be loved on by friends, family, and our room 4 kiddos! I had the best weekend and I hope you did too! See ya back here next week! - Mrs. Bowe
